The match which India will never forget

The West Indies began two decades of dominant pace bowling with a defeat in a test match, in which India easily achieved a record-breaking target of 406 runs to win with 6 wickets remaining. India’s success was led by the performances of Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath. West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, who had relied on a three-spinner attack that performed poorly with only 2 wickets for 220 runs in the fourth innings, was frustrated with the failure of his bowlers.

In the deciding series, Lloyd switched to a strategy of four pace bowlers and one slow bowler, who ultimately only bowled ten overs. India was overpowered by the West Indies’ aggressive, fast bowling and Lloyd recognized the potential of this strategy for future success.

The target of 403 was similar to the one faced by Australia in 1948 in Leeds, where Don Bradman (173 not out) and Arthur Morris (182) led the team to victory. The comparison can also be drawn in terms of the outcome, as Australia won by 7 wickets and India by 6, however, India lost only 2 wickets to bowlers, Anshuman Gaekwad and Gavaskar, while the other 2, Gundappa Viswanath and Mohinder Amarnath, were run-out.

The Australian opening pair Morris and Lindsay Hassett scored 57 runs, while Gavaskar and Gaekwad scored 69 runs. Bradman and Morris had a second-wicket partnership of 301 runs, while Gavaskar and Amarnath scored 108, which was a modest but patient and studious contribution, demonstrating the art of playing spin bowling on a slow turner.
