Most Runs Without An Individual Fifty, 315 runs
In the 2nd Test Match against West Indies at Port of Spain, in 1986 England scored 315 Runs in their 2nd Innings. The interesting thing is no English batsman scored even a fifty in that inning and this is still the Most Runs Without An Individual Fifty in any test inning.
England Captain David Gower was the highest scorer in that match with 47 Runs. West Indies won this test match by 7 wickets eventually.
England was dismissed for 176 in 44.4 overs, with Gower and Lamb scoring 106 runs for the fourth wicket. Despite the pitch lacking the speed of Kingston, Gower and Lamb were able to score at a rate of 7 runs per over, heavily punishing Patterson and Walsh. This was after Gooch and Slack were dismissed by Marshall in the first three overs.
England’s second innings began poorly 50 minutes before lunch on the third day. Slack was run out without scoring due to a miscommunication with Gooch. Gower’s second-wicket stand of 79 was ended by Walsh, as Gower missed one of the increasing number of shooters. 40 minutes later, Gooch’s three-hour innings was ended by Walsh’s late in-swinger, as he did not play any stroke.
As England closed at 168 for three, their slim chance of avoiding defeat rested on Willey, Lamb, and Botham. However, within an hour, all three were out. Payne made a diving catch in front of slip, extending Botham’s unsuccessful run, redeeming an otherwise untidy match. Shooters were by then a common occurrence, and England were in danger of being defeated by an innings when Emburey was the eighth out at 214, glancing Walsh to backward short-leg.
